The Cure’s Robert Smith announces Ticketmaster will be issuing partial refunds to fans following pressure from the artist

The Cure frontman Robert Smith has announced that Ticketmaster will be issuing partial refunds to fans following complaints about excessive fees on the site.

The fees had in some cases more than doubled the price of a ticket to see the English rock band on their Songs of a Lost World tour.

“After further discussions, Ticketmaster has agreed that many of the fees charged are unreasonably high and, as a gesture of goodwill, offered all verified fan accounts a $10 per ticket refund for transactions with the lowest ticket price,” Smith tweeted Thursday night (March 16), all caps.

“And a $5 per ticket refund to all verified fan accounts for all other ticket price transactions for all Cure shows at all venues.

“If you have already purchased a ticket, you will receive an automatic refund; Any tickets sold tomorrow will incur lower fees.”

A fan previously shared a screenshot of his purchase, which went viral, showing that if you bought four tickets for $20, there was a service fee of $11.65 per ticket, plus a setup fee of $10 per ticket and a A $5.50 processing fee may apply.

This resulted in a grand total of $172.10 for tickets worth $80. Smith said earlier this week that he was “disgusted” by the high prices.

The Cure’s Songs of a Lost World tour, which concluded its European tour in December, is coming to North America in May, June and July 2023.

Tickets for the band’s North American shows went on sale on Wednesday March 15 and The Cure had previously announced that tickets would be non-transferrable to reduce resale and overpriced tickets.

While they had the “final say” on ticket prices, they could not control additional fees from Ticketmaster.
