Baseball Report: MLB’s Trade Deadline Looms

( CBS Chicago ) — With August just days away, it’s becoming easier to differentiate between the contenders and the pretenders. Also looming is MLB’s trade deadline. MLB Trade Deadline The trade deadline for Major League Baseball is July 30. And many players could be changing teams. CDC Expected To Recommend Face Masks For Fully Vaccinated Americans Again In Some Indoor Settings

BOSTON (CBS) — The Centers for Disease Control will announce Tuesday that fully vaccinated Americans in communities with substantial or high COVID transmission should once again wear face masks in some indoor public settings, CBS News reports. The announcement comes as the highly contagious Delta variant has caused a rise in cases COVID nationwide, including some breakthrough cases among the fully vaccinated. We are told this will be specifically for places with “substantial or high transmission.” So it won’t impact everyone right now. — Ben Tracy (@benstracy) July 27, 2021 CBS News reporter Ben Tracy said the guidance will be “specifically for places with substantial or high transmission.’” Massachusetts has seen more than 5,000 breakthrough COVID cases in fully vaccinated people. Provincetown has reinstated an indoor mask mandate because of a growing coronavirus cluster, with 550 people there testing positive for the virus. Gov. Charlie Baker said last week that Mass

Mass. Traffic Is Back To Pre-Pandemic Levels, But At Different Times And Routes

STATE HOUSE, BOSTON, JULY 27, 2021 ( State House News Service ) — While the overall volume of cars on Massachusetts roadways has rebounded to the pre-pandemic crush, travel patterns remain altered and the state’s top highway official does not expect a new normal to become clear until the end of the year. Highway Administrator Jonathan Gulliver, who last month said traffic is “back to about 2019 levels,” on Monday told the Department of Transportation’s board that officials have observed an increase in trips during the middle of the day or at other off-peak times. Gulliver  presented data  comparing average weekday travel times last week to 2019, which showed scattershot changes to roadway mobility. For example, the morning commute southbound on Interstate 93 between Massachusetts Avenue Connector and the Braintree Split took about six minutes longer last week than it did two years ago, while the evening eastbound drive along I-90 between I-95 and I-93 was more than five minutes fas

Higher COVID Rate Found In Counties With Higher Vaccination Rate

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – State workers and health care employees in California will now be required to show proof of vaccine or get tested for COVID at least once a week. The governor announced the new guidance today and is urging  private employers to “replicate the example.” This comes as the highly contagious Delta variant is now dominant in the state and COVID rates have skyrocketed in the month since California officially reopened, including breakthrough cases among vaccinated Californians. A new analysis finds several counties with above-average vaccination rates also have higher COVID case rates, while case rates are falling in counties with below-average vaccination rates. Statewide data analyzed by the Bay Area New Group found the five counties, Los Angeles, San Diego, Alameda, Contra Costa, and San Francisco, have both a higher percentage of people who are fully vaccinated than the state average and a higher average daily case rate. Compare that to these five counties:

Patriots Position Preview: Running Back

By Matthew Geagan, CBS Boston BOSTON (CBS) — Leading up to the start of training camp, we’ll be breaking down each position on the Patriots roster. Here’s a look at New England’s current stable of running backs heading into the 2021 season. Patriots running backs were actually pretty solid during the 2020 season, and they should be just as effective — if not more so — in 2021. The New England ground attack received a massive boost by the fact that Cam Newton remained a talented runner in his first season with the team, as the QB averaged 4.3 yards per carry and amassed nearly 600 yards on the ground. He also ran it into the end zone 12 times last season, his highest rushing TD total since his rookie year. The running backs themselves were led by Damien Harris, who thrived once he was made the team’s starting back. The second-year pro averaged five yards per carry and picked up a team-high 691 yards on the ground over 10 games. New England’s second-leading rusher out of the back

Bill Belichick In Midseason Form When Asked About Stephon Gilmore, N’Keal Harry

BOSTON (CBS) — There are many avenues through which Bill Belichick does business. Through the media is not one of them. The Patriots head coach reminded the world of that on Tuesday when asked two specific questions about two players unhappy with their status on the team. Belichick was asked by ESPN’s Mike Reiss for the organization’s position on cornerback Stephon Gilmore, who stated publicly that he wants to get paid what he is worth. “Yeah, we’re not going to talk publicly about a contract,” Belichick curtly replied. Reiss then asked about N’Keal Harry, whose agent publicly requested a trade, indicating that Harry wasn’t given the proper opportunity to showcase his talents and abilities with the Patriots over the past two years. “Yeah. I’m not gonna talk about contracts and personal situations,” Belichick said. Fair enough! Those are, of course, responses generally in line with most of what Belichick has said about any matters involving contract disputes or public complaints

Woman Dead After Dragging Officer With Car Before Crashing Into Business In Dolton; Shots Fired By Police

CHICAGO (CBS) — A woman is dead and two police officers are in serious condition after a confrontation at a drive-thru restaurant that ended with shots fired by police and a crash in Dolton early Tuesday morning. Employees at Baba’s Famous Steak & Lemonade restaurant called police after a woman with a gun was “acting irrationally” at the drive-thru window, located at Oakley Avenue and Sibley Boulevard, around 1 a.m. The restaurant was closed at the time, and the woman apparently was upset that she couldn’t receive service, according to village spokesman Sean Howard. Officers arrived and requested the woman, and a passenger, exit the car. The male passenger got out the vehicle and the woman refused to exit, Howard said. As one of the officers attempted to remove the woman from the vehicle, she started to drive and dragged an officer, according to Howard. Another officer fired shots multiple times after observing the first officer in distress and seeing the vehicle approaching.

Driver Arraigned On OUI Charges For Deadly Crash Where Car Landed Upside In Water Off I-95

DEDHAM (CBS) — A man accused of drunk driving and causing a deadly crash in Dedham over the weekend appeared before a judge on Monday. Massachusetts State Police say Arkeem Samuel, 28, was behind the wheel of a Toyota RAV4 when it rolled over several times and landed in a flooded gully along Interstate 95. Samuel and the passenger, 27-year-old Liam Fitzgerald needed to be extricated from the car by first responders. Fitzgerald did not survive. On Monday, a judge ordered Samuel be held on $10,000 bail on the conditions that he not drive, wear a surveillance device, submit to random drug and alcohol testing, and have no contact with the victim’s family if he posts bail. According to prosecutors, Samuel told State Police after the crash that he and Fitzgerald were drinking at a Boston club then went to a house party in Brockton where he “drank too much tequila.” A defense attorney for Samuel said he is a graduate of the College of Liberal Arts, has a graduate degree from Simmons Colle

Mac Jones Has Funny Reaction To Madden Rating For Breaking Tackles

Image
BOSTON (CBS) — Mac Jones has a dynamite arm, one that  could  translate well in the pro game. His  legs , however? Those aren’t exactly known as a strength for the young QB. So when the Patriots’ rookie was asked to forecast what his Madden rating was for breaking tackles, he set some reasonably low expectations. Even those, though, were proven to be too high. In a video shared on Twitter, Jones guessed that he was a 52 (out of 100) at breaking tackles. When the reveal showed that he’s actually a 26, Jones couldn’t help but laugh out loud. “Oh my God!” an incredulous Jones said. “No way. You’re trolling me.” Jones then asked to nobody in particular: “How many tackles have I ever even broken before?” Your first look at Rookie Ratings in #Madden22 Is @MacJones_10 OVR too low? pic.twitter.com/LLgE7mVglV — Madden NFL 22 (@EAMaddenNFL) July 25, 2021 Though Jones threw for 56 touchdowns and 6,126 yards in his collegiate career, he ran for just 42 yards and two touchdowns on 54

CPD Supt. Brown Blames Crime Wave On Courts For Releasing Offenders; ‘Why Are You Releasing Violent People?’

CHICAGO (CBS) — The city’s top cop struck a defensive tone Monday when asked about the weekend violence, blaming the court system for releasing offenders. Chicago Police Department Superintendent David Brown said the courts let out people who have committed violent crimes. “What we can do different is challenge the courts to render Chicago safe,” Brown said. “Holding offenders in jail longer not releasing murderers back into our community. That’s what we can do different.” Brown’s comments come after another violent weekend. At least 71 people were shot across Chicago over the weekend, and 10 of them were killed.   At least five of the victims were under age 18, including one boy who was killed and another who was injured when they were shot in a backyard in Englewood early Saturday morning. Brown said his department shouldn’t be the only one asked about repeat offenders. “You should be adversarial to the courts. Use the same energy you just asked me that question to ask the
