In that bloody encounter, both William Saliba and Takehiro Tomiyasu hobbled away through injury, leaving the squad drained both physically and mentally.

Now they go into tonight’s home game against Crystal Palace with just three days of preparation to extend their lead at the top of the table to eight points.

And when asked about the importance of the game at Arsenal so far, Arteta said: “It’s the most important thing.

“It’s the only game we have before the (international) break.

“And we will do what we have to do. If we do that, we’ll be in a really strong position.

“A lot of players had to play 120 minutes, which we didn’t want, especially given the number of minutes some players have played, but we’ll see who’s available and who’s in what condition, and bring out the best team to win there.

“If a player’s fitness is 50-50 he can’t play in the Premier League, you have to be at 90 or 100 per cent to be at the level that we need in this league.

“There’s 48 hours to recover and everyone to judge and hopefully we’ll make a good recovery.”

Meanwhile, Arsenal legend Patrick Viera will not return to the Emirates on Sunday after being sacked as Palace manager on Friday.

It comes after poor form as the Eagles are without a win in their last 11 Premier League games.

December 31st was the last time Palace recorded a win and they are now just three points above the drop zone.
