Hockey Canada poll questions draw criticism from membership, Canadians
A poll sent out by Hockey Canada late last week has drawn the ire of its members and other Canadians at some of the questions asked by the embattled organization.
The survey, a copy of which a dissatisfied member forwarded to Sportsnet, was sent out nationwide to coaches, officials, parents, players and other volunteers involved in the game.
Conducted by New York-based research firm Forsta, the survey asks more than a dozen questions about Hockey Canada’s handling of recent allegations of sexual assault against members of Canada’s junior world teams in 2003 and 2018.
One of the sections looks at Hockey Canada’s next moves. It asks members to rate the importance—on a scale from “not at all important” to “very important”—of various possible strategies for moving forward. It includes questions about whether Hockey Canada should “introduce new leadership,” “explain what happened,” “offer an apology,” and “stop using membership dues to cover uninsured sexual misconduct claims.”
In another section, respondents are asked to either strongly agree or disagree with the following statement: “The media’s criticism of Hockey Canada is overblown.”
Hockey Canada did not respond when contacted by Sportsnet for comment.
Twitter users took to the poll with comments ranging from “The questions in this poll will tell you exactly where their heads are. Things have to change!” was enough. to “As a hockey parent, and also as a coach, team manager, team trainer, timekeeper, I can assure you that the media criticism does not even come close to the disgust I have for you over the sexual abuse scandal.”
Many of the questions and suggested answers in the survey are addressed in Hockey Canada’s action plan that was created published on its website on July 14 and by CEO Scott Smith during the July 25 hearings in Ottawa.
